I think half the women I know have collected roosters at one point in their lives. So when one of my clients asked me to make this Paper Quilled Colorful Rooster for his wife’s birthday gift, it didn’t really surprise me. Roosters are gorgeous and this one in particular really catches the eye.
My Paper Quilled Colorful Rooster is 8″ x 10″ x 1/4″ and is mounted on a sheet of fiber-infused artboard.
The majority of the rooster’s body was made by combing. I just started creating dozens of various size combed quills and used them a lot like brush strokes when I assembled him. It was important to have him outlined first so there was a “container” to paint inside of.
His tail feathers were made from large teardrops. I think that I used two strips for each of them.
There was nothing unique about his construction – just a lot of fussing with placement and blending. I think at some point I would love to go back and make another rooster but use just edgework. Maybe it’ll happen, maybe it’ll always been on my to-do list!
