This was the first in a series of four cat portraits that I created in the Spring of 2017. And it was, I believe, this Quilled Black & White Cat Portrait that prompted commissions on the rest. The others included a full body siamese, a maine coon cat, and a persian. All done in with my signature scrollwork style. It’s always fun creating creatures based on a real one. Not only does it give me a challenge, it also makes me feel good knowing I’m commemorating someone’s beloved pet.
This Quilled Black & White Cat Portrait is roughly 8″ x 8″. I created him using a photo as a reference. The most striking thing about this kitty is his electric green eyes. I used a workboard slash sheet protector technique to ensure proper proportions. It’s hard to get scrollwork to align exactly with color patterns and facial features, but even approximations usually have a decent resemblance.
I used 1/4″ standard weight strips throughout, except on the ear wisps which I believe were 1/8″.
The following pieces were made using my signature scrollwork technique, and all are cat portraits.
