In late 2014 I had a woman I met on Facebook ask for a Letter C Monogram that was “nautical.” I ended up creating two Quilled Blue Scrollwork Monograms | Letter C because when I finished with the first one, I was more inspired (and practiced) so it felt like the first one I made was lacking in something. I remade it and liked the 2nd one much better.
This is a great example of how artwork progresses over time. Always do what your heart says. If something feels “off” it probably is. Make things over and over until they give you that warm fuzzy feeling of accomplishment that all artists deserve! Never settle and never think you are done learning and experimenting and growing as an artist.
Both Quilled Blue Scrollwork Monograms | Letter C are 8″ x 10″ and made entirely with 1/4″ standard weight quilling paper. The first one (top) I wanted to try to capture the feel of “waves” so I made the entire left side out of c-coils. The right side has some scrollwork added in. Once it was done I realized that it didn’t feel balanced, so I made version 2 (bottom) entirely out of scrollwork. I liked that one much better and so did the client. I ended up selling the original for a few dollars the following year at a yard sale.
