Below are two different styles of a quilled floral labrador trio. I made two because I wasn’t sure I liked the first one after it was done and wanted to give my customer a choice.
Just like several of the pieces I made during this time, I was heavily influenced by the beautiful artwork of Justine Kuran, an artist out of Australia. Her signature pieces all had a floral motif and it was that “look” that I wanted to try out for myself.
The following pieces have a similar floral motif and were made using similar styles:
This particular commission requested two black labs and a golden lab. The first one I did (top) just didn’t have the feel I was going for so I swapped over to a more active yellow lab (see bottom images) and I liked it so much better.
The techniques I used to make these were very simple. I just cut out background paper for the three dogs in the appropriate colors. Glued them all down onto a white background. Then I created a ton of varied flowers to fill them in. The most complex part was arranging the flowers so they were balanced in shape, texture, size, and location. Once that was done, I filled in around them with “leaves” to connect the flowers with each other and fill in empty spots.
Although these guys are all living in new homes, you can commission your own floral motif artwork using my Contact page. And, if you prefer already made artwork, visit my Etsy shop. I have a ton of Ready-to-Ship and Clearance items in stock.
